I got the opportunity to meet this sweet little angel you can see in my arms. He is a double orphan. His father died before he was born, and his mother passed away shortly after his birth. He is in care of his wonderful grandmother (in photo), and his 18 year old brother is the families bread winner.
Upon arrival Blessings took the boy from his grandma and then attempted to pass him off to me. I held him only briefly as he didn’t want any part of it. That’s common though, for many babies, I am the first white person they have ever seen so playing strange is not surprising. Blessings continued to hold him for a few minutes and I reached out and took his little hand. He squeezed my fingers tightly and I knew he was warming up to me.
A few minutes later Blessings attempted to pass him to me again and this time it was successful. He stared up at me with those big brown eyes and then immediately cuddled in close. I began to slowly rock him and as I suspected he fell deep asleep in my arms. The sight of this thrilled his grandmother. She kept giggling and looking at me with her gentle smile.
As the visit continued I held this beautiful boy and thought that if there was any child that I was tempted to keep, it was him. I looked at his frail grandmother and wondered how old he would when he lost her well and thanked God that he has a big brother willing to take care of him.
One thing is for certain though, this baby is very well loved, and cared for in the best way possible. He’ll continue to grow, learn how to walk, and speak. He’ll play with his friends and climb the mango tree in his yard. He’s a bundle of potential…
